Coral care
“Coral Care” is inspired by Keto Mshigeni, a man whose passion for seaweed has transformed lives. Raised in the highlands of Tanzania, Mshigeni pursued botany studies that took him from the University of Dar es Salaam to Hawaii and the Philippines. His innovation in aquaculture not only launched the seaweed industry in Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia, greatly improving the lives of women in rural communities, but also set a precedent for mariculture research in Namibia. Mshigeni continues to inspire future generations to see untapped potential, take care of our marine ecosystems, and look for sustainable solutions in the most unexpected places.

Fable inspired by Keto Mshigeni
Keto Mshigeni grew up in the highlands of Tanzania, far from the ocean, but has developed a keen interest in seaweed nonetheless.
He graduated from the University of East Africa in Dar es Salaam with a degree in Botany and Geography, and a minor in Education. He obtained a PhD in Botanical Sciences from the University of Hawaii (USA) and did post-doctoral work in the Philippines, which is the largest producer of seaweed.
His innovative approach to seaweed farming led to the successful introduction of the seaweed industry in rural coastal village communities on the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia in the Indian Ocean. His initiatives improved the lives of rural women.
He continued his research at the University of Namibia, where he served as Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, with the creation of the Mariculture Research Complex in Henties Bay.
He was also the Vice-Chancellor of the Hubert Kairuki Memorial University in Dar es Salaam.
