Fishing without nets

“Fishing Without Nets” is inspired by Cláudia Correia, a marine biologist revolutionising traditional fishing. Working closely with fishing communities and designing innovative methods that mimic nature itself, Cláudia is paving the way toward more responsible and sustainable fishing. Her most innovative project, developed at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, mimics the feeding behaviour of humpback whales, replacing traditional nets with a network of bubbles. This method promises multiple environmental benefits, such as reducing bycatch and allowing non-target fish to be released alive, as well as economic benefits, notably by cutting the costs associated with fishing equipment. Her ingenious approach kindles new hope for the future of the oceans and inspires future generations to seek innovative solutions in harmony with nature.

Fable inspired by Cláudia Correia

Cláudia Correia

Cláudia is a marine biologist working with fishing communities since 2007 as an independent. Her work includes the empowerment of the fishing community whilst promoting their active and meaningful participation in the decision-making processes and support for fishers’ organization, and ecosystem-based management.

She worked as a researcher at University of Évora, monitoring sea lamprey and shad fisheries at both river and sea aboard fishing boats.

She also developed and coordinated an innovative patented project of a fishing gear mimicking humpback whale bubble net feeding behavior at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria.
