Drink it, wear it

“Drink it, wear it” is inspired by Jason Chen, an innovative entrepreneur in the textile field. Starting his career with a simple degree in textile engineering, he founded his own company with a different vision: producing textiles that not only ensure comfort but also foster a healthy future. His remarkable innovation, developed with Singtex, blends coffee grounds into textile production, an initiative now adopted by more than 100 international brands. In partnership with the world’s largest coffee farmers’ cooperative, he is redefining the textile industry by turning to underused natural resources such as tea leaves, rice husks and pineapple fibres. His approach inspires future generations to consider renewable resources for a sustainable world, showing the huge potential of what we consume and throw away.

Fable inspired by Jason Chen

Jason Chen started his career as a textile manufacturer, after obtaining a degree in textile engineering. He decided to create his own company in 1989 and has since then focused on functional textiles.

Unlike other producers who search for low-cost production anywhere in the world, he wanted to produce clothing that contributes to a comfortable and healthy future for mankind. In 2005, with his team at Singtex, he started working on a blend of 400 nanometre coffee granules and plastic fibres. Today the product is used in more than 100 international outdoor clothing brands. The coffee grounds were first collected from local stores but, as demand increased, a partnership emerged with the Colombian National Federation of Coffee Farmers, the world’s largest farmers’ cooperative. They now work together to produce yarn and textiles from coffee to supply the local market with local products. Using coffee is only the first of a series of creative innovations that Jason envisages. He believes that tea leaves, rice husks and pineapple fibres will offer a portfolio of additional breakthroughs for the creation of a more sustainable textile industry.
