Fable inspired by Jorge Reynolds
Jorge Reynolds studied electrical engineering in Colombia, South America. A student of Albert Einstein, he had the brilliant idea of building the first pacemaker powered by an external 12-volt battery. His original pacemaker is on display at the National Museum of Science and Industry in London. This revolutionary invention changed lives and also marked a turning point in cardiology and medicine in general.
As a researcher, Jorge drew inspiration from animals such as flies, dolphins and iguanas, but especially from whales and their large hearts. He studied them off the Pacific coast and recorded their electrocardiograms by satellite. At his initiative, the first whale-song concert was held in the ZERI Foundation pavilion at the 2000 World Expo in Germany.
Jorge Reynolds’ latest achievement is the nano pacemaker, which needs no battery, as it draws on the heart’s own contractions as a source of energy.
