Fable inspired by Sabriye Tenberken
Sabriye Tenberken was born in Germany and lost her sight at the age of twelve. She went on to study Central Asian studies, including Tibetology, philosophy and sociology. It was during her studies that she developed Tibetan Braille script.
With the Dutch national Paul Kronenberg, she co-founded the organisation Braille Without Borders, creating the first school for the blind in Tibet.
In 2005, the two of them also co-founded kanthari, an institute for engaged leadership located in Kerala, India. Kanthari trains people from all over the world, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds or who have overcome adversity, to become agents of social change within their communities.
Sabriye’s books and films, including My Path Leads to Tibet and Kanthari: Change from Within, have received numerous awards. In 2006, she received the Chinese government’s Friendship Award, and was later decorated by the Queen of the Netherlands.
Sabriye Tenberken’s journey shows that losing one’s sight can open new perspectives and is in no way an obstacle to achieving great things.
