Corals Care

"Caring for Corals" is inspired by Keto Mshigeni, a man whose passion for seaweed has transformed lives. Originally from the highlands of Tanzania, Mshigeni pursued studies in botany that took him from the University of Dar es Salaam to Hawaii and the Philippines. His aquaculture innovation not only launched the seaweed industry in Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia, significantly improving the lives of women in rural communities, but also set a precedent in mariculture research in Namibia. Mshigeni continues to inspire future generations to see untapped potential, to care for our marine ecosystems, and to seek sustainable solutions in the most unexpected places.

Fable inspired by Keto Mshigeni

Keto Mshigeni grew up in the highlands of Tanzania, far from the ocean, but nevertheless developed a keen interest in seaweed.

He graduated from the University of East Africa, Dar es Salaam, in Botany and Geography, with an option in Education. He earned a doctorate in botanical sciences at the University of Hawaii (USA) and did postdoctoral work in the Philippines, which is the largest producer of algae.

His innovative approach to seaweed cultivation successfully introduced the seaweed industry to rural communities in coastal villages on the Indian Ocean islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia. Her initiatives have improved the lives of rural women.

He continued his research at the University of Namibia, where he served as Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, with the establishment of the Mariculture Research Complex at Henties Bay.

He also served as vice-chancellor of Hubert Kairuki Memorial University in Dar es Salaam.
