Fishing without nets

"Fishing Without Nets" is inspired by Cláudia Correia, a marine biologist who is revolutionizing traditional fishing. By working closely with fishing communities and designing innovative methods that mimic nature itself, Cláudia is paving the way for more responsible and sustainable fishing. Her most innovative project, developed at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, mimics the feeding behavior of humpback whales, replacing traditional nets with a network of bubbles. This method promises multiple environmental benefits, such as reduced bycatch and the possibility of releasing non-target fish alive, as well as economic advantages, including lower costs associated with fishing equipment. Her ingenious approach sparks new hope for the future of the oceans and inspires future generations to seek innovative solutions in harmony with nature.

Fable inspired by Cláudia Correia

Cláudia is a marine biologist who has been working with fishing communities as a freelancer since 2007. Her work includes empowering fishing communities by promoting their active and meaningful participation in decision-making processes and supporting fishermen's organizations, as well as ecosystem-based management.

She worked as a researcher at the University of Évora, where she monitored sea lamprey and shad fishing in rivers and at sea on board fishing boats.

She also developed and coordinated an innovative patented fishing gear project that mimics the feeding behavior of humpback whales in bubble nets at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria.
